The City of London Solicitors' Company is a working Company, all of whose members are
solicitors. It is unique among Livery Companies in that all its members must practise or have
practised as a solicitor within one mile of the Bank of England or at Canary Wharf. The Company
reflects the history and tradition of the City and its institutions, but it is also a modern
professional organisation, promoting the interests of solicitors in the City of London. Membership
is open to all solicitors, whether or not in private practice.
Involvement in a City Livery Company
A solicitor who is a member of the Company is a member of a Livery Company, fostering goodwill
and fellowship between City solicitors and sharing in the wider traditions of the City of
London.
Full members can apply for the Freedom of the City of London and become a Liveryman of the
Company. There are over 23,000 Liverymen in the City who participate in the ceremonial traditions
of the Square Mile and have the right to vote in the election of the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs. For
more information on the Lord Mayor and the Corporation of London visit www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/lordmayor
Liverymen are also eligible for election to the Court and to hold office as Steward, Warden and
Master of the Company.
